My impression of Boulder is of a combination of Madison, Portland, Montreal and Bend. It's situated in the foothills on the lee side of a mountain range, has some of the old west flavor and is teeming with athletes - cyclists in the summer and (I imagine) skiers in the winter like Bend. It's a small town with a pedestrian mall, and is very bike and pedestrian friendly like Bend. It's a well-planned city with an urban growth boundary, dense housing and environmental friendliness like Portland. And it has some European feel with outdoor cafes and fashionable shiny happy people like Montreal.
__We checked out the town today, me stopping in at Corepower Yoga (my studio in Minneapolis that started out in Colorado) while Sascha got a pedicure, then checked out the pedestrial mall on Pearl St. Then we went up to North Boulder, got some coffee at Amante Coffee where they had high-end bikes hanging from the wall from the bike shop next door, and the Tour de France live coverage on a flat screen in the corner that we had to ignore. And excellent coffee by the way. From the students at the yoga studio to folks at the bike shops, everyone seemed friendly and happy, always a good sign. From Amante I called the Denver flagship REI for the third time to see whether they had the Sigma Sport BC 2006 MHR that I coveted (the Cateye HR200DW is still dead - no response from Cateye's lame email-only customer support as of yet). The first time I was told they had it, the second time I was told they didn't, so I hoped the third time would be a charm. Turns out they did have the floor model available, which I was happy to buy, so on the way home we stopped by and snagged it.
__Jared saved the day by generously allowing us to watch/record the Tour at his place while he's in the Cities. Yay Jared!
__Tomorrow: first mountain pass ride and initial Sigma computer impressions.
