Colorado day 4: Leadville

Today was the first big day of climbing, 4,371 ft. total, 68.7 mi. according to the new bike computer. It was a scenic ride to Leadville with a leisurely stop for lunch. We rolled out on a nice bike path along Hwy. 70 from Frisco then headed up the Fremont Pass. From there a fun descent into Leadville, lunch, then back up the pass and down to Frisco for a 'Steven special' - two shots of espresso in a shake. Yum!
The bike computer disappointed me. The current elevation display only shows four digits, so it read 9,999 feet for most of the ride. A nice feature also worked against the computer: it 'remembers' the altitude shown when it goes into sleep mode, and when it 'wakes up' it keeps that altitude setting, in spite of changes in barometric pressure. However, if the altitude shown is '9,999' when you're in Leadville at 12,000 feet, and you head back down from Leadville, suddenly you're at 9,900 feet instead of 11,900 feet. Also frustrating was the heart rate display. I was excited that it featured digital coding, supposedly preventing false signals. However, I know for a fact that my heart rate doesn't get anywhere near the shown 209 bpm, especially since I was cruising along on a flat section at the time! It also struggled to show a pulse at all, much less an accurate one, when I was riding in the drops, in spite of setting it up as shown in the directions. However, it currently shows the correct altitude, so I'll give it another chance tomorrow and we'll see.
