Carbon as an upgrade?

Ain't necessarily so. So my old Trek cyclocross bike requires a 1 inch threadless fork, which makes it hard to find carbon cyclocross forks. Most are for 1 1/8. The only affordable one is the Winwood Dusty. Here't the thing: the Winwood is old, as expected, and has an alloy steerer tube and crown, and carbon fiber legs. Beefed up for cyclocross use and not updated since it came out, it weighs in at a portly 808 grams, while the existing Kinesis alloy fork that came with the Trek weighs in at 650 grams. Even the sweet Easton EC90X all carbon monocoque CNT fork is 485 grams, saving only 165 grams for $450. For $699 I can get a whole new frameset and save a whole lot more weight...
